This event celebrates the late Hermann Wehner’s contributions to Mt Stromlo and to orienteering. Hermann passed away in late 2023 at the age of 99. This week, wherever he is, he’ll be celebrating his 100th birthday - with cake, of course! Hermann was for almost 50 years an enthusiastic orienteering competitor, mapper, organiser and mentor, as well as an astronomical engineer and resident at Mt Stromlo Observatory. We hope you enjoy navigating this place that Hermann loved. This is meant to be a fun event, we plan to have cake at the finish.
STARTS:
Start at any time between 10am and 11:30am.
COURSE CLOSURE:
Courses close at 1pm. please report to the finish by then, even if you haven't finished your course.
COURSES:
Long Sprint, 3.4km, 30 controls, bush and urban terrain, easy – moderate navigation
Short Sprint, 2.0km, 17 controls, urban terrain, easy navigation
Very Easy, 1.2km, 14 controls, urban terrain, very easy navigation
Score event, 30 controls, 1 hour limit, controls of all navigational difficulties from Very Easy to Hard
DIRECTIONS:
Travel west on Cotter Road for 0.75km beyond the Cotter Rd / Eucumbene Drive intersection. Turn right onto Mount Stromlo Road and follow this uphill for about 3.7km, ignoring all side roads to the left and passing through the open boom gates after about 2.2km, until reaching the first ruined telescope building on the left. Turn left here (O sign), avoiding orienteers crossing to the start, and proceed for 200m past the large white 74” dome (avoiding the concrete bollards in the road) and park as directed. It is likely there will be a fair few cyclists on the Mount Stromlo Road. Please drive carefully and follow the road rules when passing cyclists.
