Event Notes

This will be a unique opportunity for all juniors and seniors running the night relay at the 2025 Australian Championships to fine tune their skills and practice dealing with pressure - and for everyone else to get a glimpse of the challenges that awaits them. YOU are invited, and the more the merrier! Hard and moderate courses of different lengths will be offered.

TERRAIN AND MAP:

The event utilizes the flatter, southeastern part of Mt Jerrabomberra. The terrain has overall good runnability, but also denser areas, and contains lots of termite mounds and tracks. Extra looks at the compass when racing will be worth it!

Map scale is 1:7500 for all courses. No separate control descriptions will be provided, so please refer to the ones on the map.

ASSEMBLY AREA

Candlebark Rd, Karabar, at the southern gate 100m west of the intersection with Cunningham St. Parking along Candlebark Rd, please park considerately and be mindful of the local residents.

Please leave valuables at home, as constant presence at the assembly area can’t be guaranteed. Transport of one (1) light running jacket per person from the start back to the assembly / finish will be provided. Remember to name or otherwise mark it, as it will be put in a mixed bag.

START

A 1km walk/jog to the start will be led from the assembly area at 6.40pm (don’t be late!). Mass start for all courses at 7pm.

COURSE CLOSURE

Course closure at 8.30pm. You must report to the finish before this time, whether you’ve finished your course or not.

HAZARDS

In addition to the normal hazards associated with running in the forest be aware that:

This is night orienteering, therefore a charged and capable torch is required - capable meaning that the torch is powerful enough to light up the terrain in front of you and has a battery time of at least 1,5 hours.

Depending on where you are on the course, the running area is contained by either residential suburbs or the top of Mt Jerrabomberra to the north, east and west and the Edwin Land Parkway to the south. No roads are to be crossed during the course.

SAFETY BEARING

Take a bearing to the NE. When met with the private gardens of the residential area, turn right and follow along the edge of those on the big track until running into the finish.

ENTRIES:

Pre-entry only. Entries close 11:59pm Wednesday 17 September.

COURSES :

Hard 1 (6km), Hard 2 (3.5km), Moderate (2.5km).
