In the years since his untimely passing on 4 June 2006, Red Roos members have remembered Jim Sawkins contribution to the club, Orienteering ACT, and Orienteering Australia through a special event on or about 4 June. The 2020 Jim Sawkins Memorial Handicap was scheduled for Sunday 31 May at Wild Deer Sands, but as with all other events scheduled before 30 June, the event had to be cancelled because of COVID-19 Safe restrictions.

The Red Roos have decided, belatedly, to make ACT League # 4, which the club is staging at Awoonga on Sunday 30 August will now be the 2020 Jim Sawkins Memorial Handicap. The ACT League points program will be used to determine the divisional winners, which are determined as follows:

  • Division 1. The fastest competitor of any age and gender, on corrected time on the Hard 1 course.
  • Division 2. The fastest competitor, excluding men aged 21-34, on corrected time on the other Hard courses.

The winners will be recognised at Metro # 7 at Cooleman Ridge on 5 September.
