Saturday 16 May: Wildfire Sports Autumn Classics Day 1

2020 National Orienteering League # 11
2020 ACT League # 5
2020 NSW League # 4

Organising Club: Red Roos
Event Controller: Keith Fifield
Organiser: Tate Needham
Course Planner: Rohan Hyslop

Location: Sand dunes between Broulee and Moruya on the NSW south coast.

Map/Terrain: Broulee Dunes 2020. Scale: 1:10000, 2m contours.

This is a new map of a venue never previously used for orienteering. The map is typical south coast sand dune terrain which hugs the beach between Broulee and the Moruya airport. The vegetation is relatively slow and thick in places, but fast and open in others. The dunes get smaller and less distinct the further you are from the beach. There are a few tracks and a large creek running through the map. A recent bushfire has burnt through a section of the map, resulting in better visibility and faster running.

Event Formats
National League: The event will decide the season winner of the individual NOL competitions. Each NOL class will be over middle distance format with a chasing start. The season point score at the beginning of the event will be converted to time. Competitors will start according to how fw far they are behind the leader in their class. After thirty minutes the remaining competitors will set off in a mass start. The season winner will be the first competitor across the line. The event will count in all competitors’ season total and will be worth double points. Details of the conversion of points to time will be announced before entries close.
ACT/NSW League: For other than National League classes, the event will be a standard middle distance format, except for Start intervals at one-minute instead of the usual two minutes.

2020 National Orienteering League # 12
2020 ACT League # 6
2020 NSW League # 5

Organising Club: Red Roos
Event Controller: Andy Hogg
Organiser: Tate Needham
Course Planner: Cathy Hogg

Location: Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens, between Batemans Bay and Broulee on the NSW south coast.

Map/Terrain: Deep Creek 2020, 1:5,000, 5m contours.

This is a new map of a venue never previously used for orienteering. The terrain at Deep Creek includes the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Garden which is a complex of grassed areas, garden beds and ponds and various buildings, fences and man made structures laced with a network of paths and tracks. The garden beds and ponds are out of bounds and competitors must remain on any paths through the gardens but the grassed areas and adjoining forested areas are accessible unless taped off.

Fences within the gardens precinct are only to be crossed at gates which will be marked. The outer boundary fence can be crossed at any place including gates but with care to avoid damage.

Surrounding the gardens precinct is a catchment area for Deep Creek with sometimes steep slopes intersected by a network of minor leading to more major creeks. There are significant areas of degrees of reduced runnability and a large number of minor point features including termite mounds but also high points which are the remnants of earth control banks made when logging took place. The logging tracks are no longer apparent.

The areas of reduced runnability on the map are all passable and without thorny plants such as black berries. Overall the map will provide a range of terrain that is unusual and challenging.
