Hermann Wehner Tribute Event, Stromlo Observatory, Sunday 2 June

Hermann Wehner, 2009 World Masters Orienteering Championship gold medallist.

This event, on a new map of Mt Stromlo Observatory, will celebrate the late Hermann Wehner’s contributions to Mt Stromlo and to orienteering. Hermann passed away in late 2023 at the age of 99. This week, wherever he is, he’ll be celebrating his 100th birthday – with cake, of course! Hermann was for almost 50 years an enthusiastic orienteering competitor, mapper, organiser and mentor, as well as an astronomical engineer and resident at Mt Stromlo Observatory. We hope you enjoy navigating this place that Hermann loved. This is meant to be a fun event, we plan to have cake at the finish.

Competitors can choose from the following courses:

  • Long Sprint, 3.4km, 30 controls, bush and urban terrain, easy – moderate navigation
  • Short Sprint, 2.0km, 17 controls, urban terrain, easy navigation
  • Very Easy, 1.2km, 14 controls, urban terrain, very easy navigation
  • Score event, 30 controls, 1 hour limit, controls of all navigational difficulties from very easy to hard
