Matthew Crane Maintains Momentum

Four times ACT Orienteer of the Year, Matthew Crane, has maintained his momentum towards winning his first Runners Shop Twilight Series, with a clear win in race five on the eastern slopes of Mt Ainslie. He was fastest over the 5.4 km Moderate 1 and had the fastest kilometre rate after the age/gender handicaps were applied.

The across the line results for the two Moderate courses were:

  • Moderate 1: 4.5 km: 11 controls: Men: 1. Matthew Crane 24 min 04 sec, 2. Paul de Jongh 26 min 23 sec, 3. Rob Walter 27 min 19 sec; Women: 1. Grace Crane 33 min 10 sec, 2. Emily Walter 43 min 45 sec, 3. Alison Inglis 44 min 01 sec.
  • Moderate 2: 3.3 km: 9 controls: Men: 1. Andrew Kerr 23 min 30 sec, Jesse Piiroinen 28 min 05 sec, 3 Eoin Rothery 29 min 30 sec; Women: Cath Chalmers 30 min 20 sec, Alice Radajewski 39 min 46 sec, Carys Connick 40 min 03 sec.

After the handicap factors were applied, Crane’s kilometre rate was nine seconds faster than next best Eric Morris, with race 1 winner, Toni Brown a further 13 seconds slower per kilometre. The top 10 competitors in Race 5 were:

Crane’s win, coupled with his win last week, has catapulted him into a clear lead in the Series on 373 points from his best three runs, with a four-point margin over Hayden Dent. The top five with the best three scores are:
