Steep Slopes Slows Speedsters

Course planner David Poland, for the first event in the 2021-22 Runners Shop Twilight Series on the Mt Majura West map, unwittingly gave an advantage to competitors who decided to run the 3.2 km Moderate 2 course over those who decided to run the 4.9 km Moderate 1 course. As he noted in his course planners comments, the Moderate 1 course would be “Harder than a usual long moderate both physically and navigation wise.”

The across the line results for the two Moderate courses were:

  • Moderate 1: 4.9 km: 140 m climb: 19 controls: Men: 1. Ryan Stocks 31 min 11 sec, 2. Matthew Crane 34 min 28 sec, 3. Martin Dent 35 min 35 sec; Women: 1. Grace Crane 41 min 12 sec, 2. Elise Palethorpe 49 min 22 sec, 3. Alison Inglis 51 min 22 sec.
  • Moderate 2: 3.2 km: 45 m climb; 15 controls: Men: Dean Davies 24 min 42 sec, 2 Jesse Piiroinen 25 min 27 sec, Eoin Rothery 25 min 28 sec; Women: 1. Kathie Dent 25 min 30 sec, 2. Cath Chalmers 26 min 58 sec, 3. Toni Brown 28 min 15 sec.

The full results are here and at Winsplits, and maps and photos are on Facebook.

The impact of the difference in difficulty between the two courses became obvious after the age/gender handicaps were applied, as Ryan Stocks was the only competitor who ran the Moderate 1 course to be in the top ten, listed below

Competitor Handicap  Corrected times
Toni Brown 0.6000 5 min 17.81 sec
Eoin Rothery 0.6880 5 min 28.52 sec
Cath Chalmers 0.6560 5 min 31.69 sec
Darryl Erbacher 0.5200 5 min  34.10 sec
Alice Radajewski 0.6080 5 min 39.34 sec
Hayden Dent 0.7360 5 min 42.78 sec
Kathie Dent 0.7360 5 min 51.90 sec
Sanda Halpin 0.5840 6 min 09.74 sec
Bill Jones 0.6160 6 min 14.03 sec
Ryan Stocks 1.0000 6 min 21.84 sec

No doubt the impact of the first event will be smoothed over the remaining 12 events.

The standings after race 1 are here. The next event will be at Stromlo West on Wednesday 10 November.
