What’s Involved in Becoming an Accredited Coach?

Congratulations to Marina Iskhakova who recently became accredited as a Level 1 orienteering coach!
If you would like to know more about how to skill up as a coach, or to find yourself a coach, there are lots of resources online.

We are lucky in Canberra as we have many people volunteer their time to run training and coaching activities. At the end of 2019 we had 13 people attend a 2020 coaching planning session, and we are always keen to see the number of accredited coaches grow across all levels.

The first step to becoming a coach is Level 0 – you start with the free online Sports Australia Community Coaching certificate course, which takes about 3-4 hours (you can do this over weeks), you will also need to obtain a Working With Vulnerable People card.
The Level 0 course is ideal for coaches that wish to introduce newcomers to the sport of orienteering. It may be through street and urban orienteering, or possibly introductory programs at schools. The forms for Level 0 are available on the OACT coaching page.

For all other levels – Orienteering Australia has just updated the syllabus, including the application forms, and the process for recognition of prior learning activities.
Links to the new syllabus for each level are available on the OACT coaching page.
