Orienteering in the ACT is turning 50!

To mark the occasion, a 50th Anniversary event will be conducted as part of the Midweek Series on Wednesday 19 May. This will include a short ‘Flashback’ event using part of the 1971 Black Mountain (black-and-white) map and 1971 style equipment, as well as a historical display.

Past and present orienteers are welcome to take part in one of the courses, or just come along to see the display and renew old acquaintances.

STARTS:

Start and finish location for courses: In Black Mountain Reserve 500 m along cycle path from the assembly (or 300 m from car park).

Start anytime between 12 noon and 1pm. You must return by 2pm.

ASSEMBLY:

Black Mountain Reserve Car Park/Aranda Snow Gums entrance. Follow brown signs from William Hovell Drive. If you are not familiar with this car park, please see detailed instructions for accessing it below. Drive past the tent at the Snow Gums entrance and park along the access road or in the Black Mountain Reserve Car Park.

DIRECTIONS:

Car parking will be in Black Mountain Reserve Car Park signposted (brown sign) from William Hovell Drive eastbound.

If coming westbound along William Hovell Drive there is a U-Turn place which is also signposted for Black Mountain Reserve Car Park.

From northbound traffic on Tuggeranong Parkway take the exit to West Belconnen, just past the arboretum, and follow the brown signs to the car park. Please do not attempt to take the turning from the northbound Caswell Drive/GDE directly into the car park which is shown on Google Maps.

For southbound traffic on Caswell Drive go through the Glenloch interchange and exit for Lady Denman Drive and the arboretum, turn right under the Tuggeranong Parkway toward the arboretum and then right again to head towards west Belconnen in the left hand lane. Follow the brown signs to the car park.

COURSES:

Two courses are planned, both using the 1971 black-and-white map with limited updating and with plastic buckets as control markers:

Course 1. Moderate, approx. 4 km (equivalent to usual Wednesday lunchtime Moderate 1 course, includes some steep gully crossings).

Course 2. Moderate – easy, approx. 2 km (mainly along tracks with some controls a short distance off tracks, designed for the not-so-fit).

No SI units or punches will be used. Competitors copy code numbers off the buckets at each control (pencils will be tied to buckets for those who need them).

ENTRIES:

Pre-entry is not essential and there is no entry fee. However, if you have access to Eventor, it would assist the organisers if you register your intention to come through Eventor, even if you have a season pass for Wednesday events (no payment involved).
