OACT Logo History
Do you know the connection between the Royal Bluebell and Sweden; the spiritual home of orienteering?
The official name for the Royal Bluebell is Wahlenbergia gloriosa. The genus Wahlenbergia was proposed by the German botanist Heinrich A Schrader in 1814 in honour of Georg Goran Wahlenberg (1780-1851), a Professor of Botany at Uppsula, Sweden, and described by Albercht Roth in 1821. The species name gloriosa is Latin for ‘superb’ or ‘glorious’, a reference to superb qualities of a plant worthy of cultivation.
