On Monday Canberra Cockatoos won both the senior and junior women’s individual and teams’ divisions in the National Orienteering League staged in the combined grounds the Renmark Primary and High Schools. After a couple of lack lustre performances on the preceding days, Belinda Lawford and Tara Melhuish found their best form to win the senior and junior individual divisions respectively. Both divisions ran the same course and Melhuish was faster than all senior women bar Lawford who beat her by 26 seconds over the 3,250-metre course.
The junior women won the teams’ division each day over the weekend and seem certain to record the teams’ first ever win of the National League which concludes with two races near Gawler on 6-7 October. The senior men’s team is the only other Cockatoos team that has any prospect of winning their division, which would be its eighth consecutive win, but it will require outstanding performances in both remaining races. An update of progress points will be published later in the week.
I have not had time to go through the results to document all the victories by ACT orienteers, but links to the results, splits, maps and photos are listed below.
