Three of the Canberra Cockatoos best have been selected to join the national team, the Australian Boomerangs, to contest the World Orienteering Championships in Latvia in early August. Belinda Lawford, who debuted last year, will contest the Sprint Distance, the mixed (2-men, 2-women) Sprint Distance Relay and the 3-person Women’s Relay.
Matt Crane, a veteran of seven WOCs (six for Great Britain and one for Australia in 2017) has been selected to be the key runner for the Boomerangs in the Middle Distance, Long Distance and Men’s Relay. This will be a very demanding program.
For Matt Doyle, the third Cockatoo, his selection came as a surprise as he is just out junior ranks and only joined the Cockatoos this year after moving from Victoria. Doyle will be the 94th orienteer to represent Australia at WOC and will join Crane in contesting the Middle Distance and Men’s Relay.
