There are only two weeks remaining to enter the 2019 ACT Championships, which will be held over the weekend of 31 August/1 September.
The events will be:
- Saturday 31 August: ACT Middle Distance Championships (Karst Cup), Carey’s Cave, Wee Jasper. 2019 ACT League #10, NSW State League #12
- Sunday 1 September: ACT Long Distance Championships, Slap Up Creek, Jerangle. 2019 ACT League #11, NSW State League #13
Careys Cave is a new venue with the main features being Karst rocks and according to the course planner, Darryl Erbacher, competitors will face many challenges in interpreting the rock detail. In light of the complexity, the map scale for all courses is 1:7500. As this will be the first use of the area, the occasion will be recognised through the awarding of the Karst Cup (pictured right). The competition will be open to all competitors in Championship classes on Hard courses. The winner will be the competitor with the fastest kilometre rate after adjustment for age and gender using the program for calculating ACT League points.

Slap Up Creek has been used only once, six years ago, for the 2013 Australian Long Distance Championships, the map from that event (pictured right) can be downloaded here. The area is a granite plateau between 1200 m and 1300 m elevation. There are sections of lightly timbered farmland as well as forested areas. The farmlands are very runnable, though steep in parts. The forest is almost flat with pleasant running through numerous granite boulders, knolls, minor streams and gullies. The complex granite terrain will provide ideal preparation for Oceania 2019.
