As we head towards our major event Easter 2023, it’s great to see so many ACT orienteers take up the opportunity to enhance their orienteering skills. This year alone OACT has hosted a broad suite of sessions offering both introductory as well as technical sessions from beginner to advanced.

In early February, over 5 sessions, Focus on Girls and Women, and Orienteering Training for Boys, offered an intensive series of trainings directed and delivered by a fun and engaging group of coaches, Natalie, Toby and Toni. These sessions raised the bar a notch or 2 bringing together plenty of family fun as well as serious training. This supportive, collaborative and confidence building environment is sure to have orienteers well prepared for the year ahead.

Mountain Bike Orienteering Workshops lead into the first MTBO event of the year, preparing new and returning riders in wheely great way! The terrific line-up of new and returning MTBO entrants at MTBO Coolamon Ridge demonstrates the increasing interest and engagement from our pedalling partners. Huge thanks to Marina Iskhahova and Rainee McNee for bring 2023 MTBO to life!

Then, 5 weeks of TRAKOTACK, targeting Easy level seeking to transition to the Moderate course. Newer orienteers and regular orienteers worked together on this one seeking advancement to reach their goals. As intended, these sessions set in train additional tools for the navigation tool kit for juniors and adults.

The final tranche of season opener training is happening this weekend, 17-19 March at the Cooma Training Camp. Five sessions lead by some of OACTs most experienced coaches will deliver barrel loads of boulders, and bundles of fun. This camp is for all ages and includes night training, day training and desk training! What more can be fitted into 48 hours!! This camp is highly recommended for those juniors intending to trial for a place in the ACT Schools Squad to compete at the 2023 Australian Schools Orienteering Championships (first trial 13 May).
If you haven’t made it to formal training sessions yet – this is your last chance this term.

Training for juniors will kick off in Term 2 with Blue Lightning sessions happening for an hour before Saturday series – watch this space for news and information on Blue Lightning 2023. For enquiries or to join Blue Lightning, send an email to BlueLightningACT@gmail.com.

Coaching builds confidence. Coaching creates connections. Coaching builds community.

ACT coaches contribute enormously to our orienteering community, whether delivering Sporting Schools Programs in Primary and High Schools, squad coaching with Blue Lightning or with other squads and groups such as Focus on Girls and Women, or MTBO.

Everyone comes to orienteering from a different starting point. Perhaps the love of the bush, maybe dragged along by parents, some might be looking for a non-contact sporting option while others are just sick of the gym. Regardless of the how or why someone chooses to try orienteering, to reap the greatest reward, one must know how. This is where the coach comes in.

As in all sports, many of the skills of orienteering are passed on to offspring. Over dinner time chatter, attending events with mum and dad, and even just having maps about the place. But for the majority, orienteering skills have not been learned this way.

Some have learned through informal post-run ‘chats’ and for others, this might be coupled with formal training. Most importantly the coach provides the individual sport specific skills PLUS motivation, inspiration, self-confidence and enthusiasm.

The coach helps make the right connections. They might link up adults of similar abilities or link up kids with similar interests so that there can be a joy in learning together.

The coach helps map the path for those people wanting to continue with orienteering, for those keen prospective orienteers.

Making orienteering visible in the ACT is one way to share the joy of the sport.

Did you know that OACT has delivered to over 7000 ACT school kids through the Sporting Schools Program since the start of 2019 that’s over 800 hours of time in ACT schools sharing the love and passion of our sport.

As Grant Bluett recently said, discovering and believing that orienteering is a real sport, is empowering for keen athletes of this sport.

To that end real sports need real coaches. They don’t have to be top level orienteers, but they need to love the sport they’re in and be keen to motivate and inspire. They help orienteers can become the best that they can.

If you are interested in contributing the coaching space in any way contact Toni Brown OACT Development Officer.

Around 25 keen wild runners got into Spring Women’s and Girls training this season – a great turnout.

The program was a little different to usual beginner training – we stayed well away from the compass and jumped deep into the map.

Some sessions were worked in pairs while others needed some solo exploration.

The Lolly-O proved a great driver and those with a competitive streak were hungry for a Royal Flush in Poker-O.

In fact we got more Royal than we bargained for, firstly with our Friday debrief focused on counting to 96, then to keep us on our toes, we were off to Queens Park for a group BBQ, before the final flush, orienteering with lights against the backdrop of a wild storm.

The group demonstrated the grit required to take on serious bush orienteering and its expected that many of the younger girls will seek out further orienteering opportunities.

Good luck to those participating in SCORE in October and to those girls heading off to Victoria shortly for the Australian Orienteering Championships.

Since 2015, orienteering training with a focus on girls has helped to attract, support and grow women and girls in orienteering in ACT. With more than 20 women and girls signed up this month, the fun continues. Unlike previous series, where we have meet weekly for 4 weeks, this time a new format is being tried – 6 sessions in 2 weeks – intensive!

The group includes those who have “always wanted to have a go at orienteering”, others that did it “years ago” plus some swept in from SCORE – School Orienteering, and others literally “found in the bush” (they know who they are ).

Some of our strongest junior girl orienteers are using the sessions for Australian Championships preparation, all the while assisting with coaching by providing quality support, technical training and inspiration to our younger girls and introductory women – thanks Justine Hobson and Natalie Miller.

A special thanks also to regular orienteers Jo Hobson (Bushflyers) and Marina Iskahova (Red Roos) who are also assisting with coaching.

Check out the action on the facebook page here.

The series wraps up on Friday and when we hit up a bit of wild night nav as practice for future events including Stringybark Hill and SCORE.

The fantastic Focus on Girls program will return for four Friday sessions in May. This instruction is female only (minimum age 10 years) and will prepare women and girls for bush navigation.

Friday 6 May, Kellaway Street, Hackett

Friday 13 May, South end Hayley Street, Ainslie

Friday 20 May, The National Arboretum

Friday 27 May, Review/Wrap-up session, Mt Ainslie Drive, Campbell

Sessions will be modified to meet the different needs and skill levels of participants, and to make sure everyone has fun!

Here is how it will work:
