The familiar format of five, hour-limit courses will return.

There will be no mass start. Participants can start at any time between 5:40pm and 6:15pm, using a self-timing honesty system.

A season pass is available, covering all four September events. $12 for adults, free for juniors.

Pre-entry, either via the season pass or to individual events, is strongly encouraged. Entry fees are $5 for adults, free for juniors (but must still register). Entries close at 5pm on the Sunday before each event.

There will be no punching at controls, instead participants mark their control card using their own pen.

A series of daylight street-O events will continue from October onward, with 12 events running from 5 October to 21 December.
A separate season pass is available for these events.

Martin Dent showed he is in magnificent form for the Australian Sprint Championship next weekend with a sizzling 25.50 to win course A, covering 6.8 km. 2017 World Masters silver medallist Shannon Jones also showed peak fitness in winning Women’s A in 32.27, running 6.8 km as well. Michael Burt punched 17 controls in a great effort to apparently be best walker.

19 March 2018 – Street Series at Hughes

With only one more daylight saving event in the 2017-18 street orienteering program, course setters Michael and Rebecca Tedeschi made the most of many interesting park control sites. In doing so they also set quite a few route choice planning challenges and working out which controls to drop and which to include. Geoff Stacey was the men’s winner of the A course with 7.3 km while Shannon Jones won Women’s A in 36.53 with a distance of 7.87 km. Bruce Barnett was outstanding in the walk, punching 17 controls. Next Monday Zac Zaharias has another outstanding event planned on the popular full colour Parkes map in the Parliamentary Triangle. It is a cross between street and sprint orienteering. The assembly area is lakeside at the National Sculpture Garden and Zac has many interesting controls to make this an exciting event for families to do a walk around as well as experienced orienteers looking for a great final hit out before Easter.

Monday 12 March: Deakin
Another Monday, another superb street orienteering event in great weather with great course planning by Mark Sparshott, this time in the leafy streets of Deakin. The assembly area was at the Deakin Anticline, an interesting historic site. Unfortunately the Canberra Day public holiday had numbers down to 54, half the usual for an inner Canberra suburb.

The A course saw a miraculous result with a 35 min 40 sec tie between Matthew Purcell and Geoff Stacey, despite one running clockwise and the other anticlockwise around their 18 control routes. David Alder was 3rd in 39.55. Florian Benz and Des Davis won the B course, Phil Walker and Tracey White the C, while Roger Edwards, Rebecca Tedeschi and the Gao family dominated the D course. Geoff Barker had a 7 minute win with 12 controls in the 1 hour walk. Rosemarie Edwards was the top female walker, also with 12 controls.

Monday 12 March Results
Maps and photos

Some tips from Melbourne street O

Keep an eye on the clock and your rate of travel as you move around the course. Don’t get back late – so plan to be within 1km of the finish as your time reduces to say 10-12 minutes to go. (I draw a mental circle, 1km in radius, on the map – and plan to be inside it with plenty of time to get to the finish. If I can’t get to the circle in time, I drop controls and head towards it – better to be 2-3 minutes early than 1 second late).

As you approach a control, read the control description so you know what you’re looking for, think about where you’re going to next, align the scorecard to the correct square……and as you reach the control, punch in the middle of the square (e.g. if you arrive at control 11, then you punch in square 11) and immediately head towards your next control. Standing around to think about where to go next will cost you 20-30 seconds per control … about 4 minutes on the course above. This is equivalent to about 400m of travel!
