As the 2022-23 Runners Shop Twilight Series draws to a close, Martin Dent seems to have secured first place, but the minor placings are still in contention. And, with five events still to go, other competitors, with good runs, could influence the final standings.

In recording the fastest corrected km rate for event 8 in 2022-23 Runners Shop Twilight Series at Lake Ginninderra, Katherine Maundrell became the first junior woman to win a race under the OACT age/gender handicap system since Ella Cuthbert won event 2 in 2019-20 Runners Shop Twilight Series at Ginninderra Creek on 30 October 2019. Maundrell joins a select group of young women, including Rebecca Minty, Zoe Melhuish, Heather Harding and Cuthbert to win a race under the handicap conditions.

Maundrell’s time of 26 min 04.44 sec for the 4.2 km Moderate 1 course, which with her age/gender handicap factor 0.6560 converted to a km rate of 6 min 04.44 sec, the fastest for the race. The top 10 on corrected time, which again did not include anyone from the Moderate 2 course, were:

As with the previous week at Mt Majura, Martin Dent coped better than other competitors with the steep, rocky terrain of Mt Taylor to record the fastest time of 30 min 6 sec for the 4.9 km Moderate 1 course, which with his age/gender handicap factor 0.9100 converted to a km rate of 5 min 35.40 sec, the fastest for the race, but over 30 seconds slower than at Mt Majura.

Martin Dent surged through the long grass at Mt Majura to record the fastest time of 32 min 12 sec for the 5.8 km Moderate 1 course, which with his age/gender handicap factor 0.9100 converted to a km rate of 5 min 02.60 sec, the fastest for the race.

The fifth event in the 2022-23 Runners Shop Twilight Series was difficult for course planner Cath Chalmers and competitors alike. Apart from the extremely long grass, a product of the prolonged periods of rain, making running difficult, the grass also concealed many features, including tracks. The conditions seem to favour younger orienteers who filled three of the top five places after handicaps were applied.

After the handicap factors were applied Owen Radajewski, with a corrected kilometre rate of 6 min 14.67 sec, was about 18 seconds faster than David Stocks, who was just 0.86 seconds ahead of Martin Dent. The top 10 corrected time were:

After five events, the competition has narrowed to a battle between the current equal leaders, who are also recent series winners, and emerging juniors. In a closely contested competition, the top five placings after five events are:

The 2022 Classic Season finished with the deferred Jim Sawkins Classic race at Honeysuckle Creek, its first use since the fires of early 2020. Apart from the rain-sodden terrain, competitors were challenged by post-fire undergrowth and the usual networks of granite boulders.

The Jim Sawkins Classic is a Handicap competition with two Divisions:

• Division 1, on ACT League course Hard 1, an Open competition for all ages and both genders.
• Division 2, on ACT League other Hard courses, a Restricted competition for competitors of both genders, but only for Men aged under 21 and 35 and over and all Women.

Competitors’ times are ‘corrected’ in accordance with the same Age/Gender factors used for ACT League and Runners Shop Twilight Series competitions to determine the winners.

Victorian Aston Key, Australia’s top-ranked male, won the 7.0 km Division 1, with a kilometre rate of 7 min 7.2 sec and local, Rob Walter won Division 2, with a km rate of 8 min 9.19 sec. Justine Hobson, third in Division 2, was the top female.

The Jim Sawkins Classic was also the 13th and final race in the 2022 ACT League. The top three places in the ACT League competition are in the following table. The winner of the 2022 ACT League and Wehner Cup and the top 10 placings will be announced at the OACT Awards, scheduled for early 2023.

After the handicap factors were applied Shannon Jones with a corrected kilometre rate of 4 min 20.35 sec, about 3.5 seconds faster than last week’s winner Martin Dent, with around nine seconds to Hayden Dent. The top 10 corrected time were:

After a third each in the first two races, Dent won last week’s event at Campbell Park by 15 seconds per kilometre from Jones and on Wednesday at Stirling Park, Jones turned the tables on Dent to beat him by just 3.5 seconds per kilometre on corrected time. Although there are still 11 races to go, Jones and Dent are favoured to fight out the Series.

Martin Dent, a previous winner in 2019 and 2021, was fastest on corrected time at Campbell Park on Wednesday and leads the 2022-23 Runners Shop Twilight Series after three races.

Course planner, David Poland, provided a third Moderate course to enable those who wished to avoid climb and some of the long grass and boggy conditions which all competitors had to endure to a greater or lesser extent.

In possibly the closest finish in the 26-year history of the Runners Shop Twilight Series, less than two seconds covered the top four places after the age/gender handicap factors were applied to the results of 2022-23 Series race two at The Pinnacle on Wednesday.

Competitors were faced with the physical challenge of long grass and some moderate to steep climb on some legs, and the added navigational challenge of courses, which included a maze mid-course, by highly-experienced course planner David Hogg.

After the handicap factors were applied junior David Stocks finished with a handicap kilometre rate of 5 min 26.66 sec, with just 0.38 seconds faster than Paul de Jongh, a further 0.78 seconds to Shannon Jones, and just another 0.64 seconds to Rob Walter, an overall 1.9 seconds behind Stocks.

Hayden Dent, 12 years-old, was the fastest on corrected time in the opening race of the 2022-23 Runners Shop Twilight Series at Weston Park on Wednesday. It was his fifth win in the Series in the past 12 months. Mira Walter, not yet to celebrate her 13th birthday, was a surprise second, and 2020-21 winner, Martin Dent, was third.  Juniors filled six of the top 10 places.  The top 10 on corrected time, after handicap factors were applied, were.
