Map Mates BBQ & Prizes Wed 22 Nov.

The competition is complete and our 35 Map Mates have learnt heaps of new orienteering skills and put them in to practice on the Blue & Green courses. Enthusiasm levels have been soaring, and it’s great to see the effort put in to team uniforms and Fun Fact sheets each week. Their learning was obvious in the race to answer Kristen & Ciaran’s quiz questions at the training session last night!

We hope they all continue to enjoy orienteering for the rest of the Twilight season & beyond.

This year the OACT End-of-Year Awards Dinner will be held at the Yacht Club Marquee on Sunday 26 Nov from 6pm.

The dinner is subsidised by OACT, to enable as many members and families as possible to attend. Please come along to support our award winners and enjoy the lakeside atmosphere & great company!

Spring Map Mates Registration Open – Welcome Event Wed 18 Oct

Two ideal starter packs for children begin soon.

The Summer Wednesday Twilight 2017 Map Mates competition for teams of 2-4 Primary School aged children, will commence with a welcome event on 18 October.
The before school SC-ORE competition begins Oct 19th and lasts for four Thursdays. Entries close Thursday Oct 12th

The Map Mates welcome event is open to any prospective Map Mates and is free! The Map Mates competition will run from 25 October to 15 November.

Competitors will then be entitled to free entry to all the Twilight Series events!

Map Mates is a great introduction to orienteering with the weekly coaching sessions focusing on orienteering fundamentals such as orientating the map, map symbols, planning each leg and ‘thumbing the map’, as well as specific tips tailored to the particular map at each event. The emphasis is on fun, adventure and learning new skills, so grab a mate or two and join in the fun!

Winter 2017 Map Mates Wrapup

With the winter ACT Metro and Junior Series League coming to an end next week and the summer Map Mates competition registration opening soon, it seemed like a great time to tell everyone about the fantastic winter series of Map Mates. This series there were over 40 competitors, making up 18 teams! It was a tight competition with only 10 points between the top six teams. Team Kugelblitz (which according to the boys is the ‘fastest thing around’) took competition honours. Their scores showed that performing consistently each week, challenging themselves to step up to a green course, wearing a cool team uniform and filling in their fun-fact sheets each week, was a winning formula!

Congratulations to all our Winter 2017 Map Mates teams and their fantastic families who supported them each week! The Blue Sparks coaches were impressed by the commitment shown by all of the teams. What was particularly noticeable this series was the great teamwork displayed by these young competitors. Working together to determine their ‘attack points’ and ensuring they had their ‘exit directions’ correct. Listening and learning from each other, as well as encouraging each other to run faster, stay focussed and step-up to that harder course!

It was a privilege to watch the development of these young competitors over the four weeks, as well as to see so many Map Mates continue to attend the ACT Metro and Junior Series League events over the past ten weeks. A special mention goes out to Wilbur Robinson (Team Cat Ears) who hasn’t missed an event this season! Last week he and his mum were seen heading off to test themselves in the ‘king/queen of the mountain’ timed leg at the Aranda Hills event. Great work!
