With abundant birds, animals, waterholes and verdant green vegetation Campbell Park is looking beautiful for the Runner Shop Twilight Series event on Wednesday 2nd Nov. It is even too early in the season for grass seeds and thistles and the ground is deliciously soft. David Poland has designed a range of courses from easy to challenging, short to long. Take your pick. For moderate enthusiasts you will find that every control is placed in a vague gully – a great way to improve your contour reading and to read the subtle spurs and gullies without the risk of getting truly lost – (there are plenty of safety catching features such as tracks or fences).

There will be three moderate courses. Moderate 3 is shorter than usual and designed to avoid all fences and hills. Moderate 1 is a bit longer and harder than usual so start by 6.10 pm for this one.

For all courses allow ten minutes walk to the start.

The following courses will be on offer:

Moderate 1 (5.7 km, 16 controls)
Moderate 2 (3.7 km, 9 controls)
Moderate 3 (2.7 km, 6 controls
Easy (2.3 km, 10 controls)
Very Easy (1.4 km, 8 controls)

Season passes for the series are available on Eventor, or you can enter the individual event here. Don’t forget that entries for each Twilight Series event close at 5pm Tuesday.

SC-ORE School Orienteering Spring 2017 Final Results

SC-ORE School Safe Orienteering, the ideal introduction to outdoor adventure sports, saw 140 ACT primary school students – 70 girls and 70 boys, aged 8 to 12, give their all in this year’s 4-week team based challenge. With events conducted on unfamiliar maps and requiring some complex navigation, all 140 did their best to conquer the course setters game plan. Students keenly arrived early to events (yes, this is a BEFORE school endeavour!) eager to take to the start box.

Clearly the perfect “starter pack”, SC-ORE provides a well-supported introduction to competitive orienteering in a safe and supervised environment. Key ingredients include:

Engaged parents – terrific as volunteers and respectful spectators!
Host schools – thanks to North Ainslie Primary, Ngunnawal Primary, Emmaus Christian School and St Thomas More’s Primary for supporting the 2017 Spring series by sharing your facilities.
Participating students – AMAZING team spirit, exuberance and keenness to try something different! Well-done to the 35 teams. Congratulations to Aranda M (1st place), Curtin A (2nd place), and Majura 4 (3rd place).

168 people enjoyed Karabar’s intricate maze

The Wednesday Twilight Event at Karabar High and Queanbeyan South Primary combined the safety of a school ground with the challenge of an intricate maze. Karabar High with its twisting corridors and indoor courtyards challenged all of our map reading skills. It was made even more challenging my temporary construction barriers (marked on the map) But there was no need to be concerned as we could never get truly lost as the courses never left the school grounds! An experiment of starts from 4 pm was as popular option for about 20 people but unfortunately thwarted by some last minute school exam issues (Our apologies for this matter that was outside of our control. ) The rain held off and the 168 participants appeared to have an enjoyable evening. Many elites also found the course quite a challenge with several making not the best route choices under the time pressure of quick decisions. Slower competitors however seemed to make fewer errors.
