For next week’s twilight event, Parawangan JWOC stars Ella Cuthbert and Elin Erne have used a new start to open up the less rugged but navigationally more intricate terrain in the northwestern part of Black Mountain. OK, so a bit of a trek to the Assembly, and to the Start, but worth the trip! Both Moderate courses feature a map flip, with a standard control sequence followed by a fast-paced microsprint finishing sequence of tight legs on a 1:4000 scale map. PLEASE READ the Event Notes, and an important kangaroo notice displayed at the Parking area and at Assembly. And hope there is no total fire ban for Wednesday 5th.

See the event page for directions, event notes, and other details.

A huge contingent of Parawangans challenged themselves to the permanent courses at Weston Park before relaxing over an end-of-year picnic and awards presentation on Sunday 2nd December. Santa Jill brought a sack of random draw prizes for permanent course completers.

Along with regulars the Ingwersens, Erbachers, Walkers, Garrs, Guinnesses, Monaghans, Pywells, Hoggs, Liz and Bruce, Liz, Ian and Nikolaus, Nick and Zoe, Geoff, Bryant, Pat, and Colleen, numbers were swelled by newer members the Radajewski family. Not to mention Bolt the border collie, the best cricket fielder on the day, who cunningly knew to watch the batsman, not the bowler, to track and chase down the ball.

After arriving fashionably late, President Bryant reviewed the club’s 2018 achievements before introducing award presenters.

Statistician Darryl determined that Luca Hogg and Jack Laing could not be separated on the improvement scale, both achieving 100% improvement! Joint winners there.

Mike Cassells Award winner Bryant was a clear winner for the Blue Man Award for Services to the Club, having not only guided the club through five busy years, but also frequently stepped in to set or organise, as well as making a substantial contribution to OACT’s mapping program.

However, Hasten Slowly Snail Award hopefuls were disappointed, because performances in the bush were apparently all so consistent that Nathan couldn’t pick a worthy successor. Better luck next year!

Colleen

Parawanga Orienteers kicked off a busy month with the traditional BBQ Annual General Meeting on the Pywells' shaded deck last week. All incumbents were re-elected – Bryant Allen (President), Colleen Mock (Secretary), and Pat Miethke (Treasurer) – what a team!

Jill Walker generously offered to share the secretarial duties by taking on the role of Parawanga Paragraphs writer. Jill will be scouring for any and all vaguely orienteering-related news snippets.

Next up was the first of two PO twilight events in February, at Mt Ainslie, to be closely followed on 21st by the chance to run on the newly revised Lake Ginninderra East map.

And for a nostalgic reminisce over past glories, have a browse of the Parawanga Paragraphs 2004-2017 Archive: Parawanga-Paragraphs-2004-2017-Archive.pdf
