Orienteering ACT’s Metro Series is back for another winter of fast, fun navigation – and it all begins on Saturday 2nd May at the beautiful John Knight Park.

This opening event promises something a little different, with a special feature designed to test even the sharpest navigators: a maze section built into both the Moderate 1 and Moderate 2 courses. Expect quick decision-making, tight turns, and plenty of chances to second-guess your route – in the best possible way.

Whether you’re a seasoned orienteer or just keen to give it a go, there’s a course for you:

Very Easy – perfect for beginners, kids and families, 0.9km

Easy – a gentle introduction with simple navigation, 1.3km

Moderate 1 (2.8km) & Moderate 2 (2km) – step up the challenge, including the maze feature

Set in the open parkland and lakeside surrounds of John Knight Park, this sprint-format event is all about speed and precision. Courses are shorter, controls come quickly, and every route choice counts.

The Metro Series runs on Saturday mornings from May through August, offering a welcoming and social way to stay active through the cooler months while exploring some of Canberra’s best parkland and bush venues.

So grab a map, bring a friend, and come along to kick off the series. Whether you’re racing hard or just enjoying the outdoors, this is orienteering at its most accessible – with a twist.

It will be an ABOMINABLY great event, so see you at the start line!

The Australian Junior Development Camp 2024 started on 14 December on the hot Saturday afternoon in Canberra. The MapRun score course in the parkland around National Library of Australia, Old Parliament House, Questacon and National Gallery of Australia offered an interesting introduction to orienteering in the capital city. In the evening all the participants met their coaches and took part in the trivia night. They also heard the important message from Orienteering Australia’s chief medical officer to keep sipping water in hot weather.

The second day of the camp saw training early in the morning to beat the heat. After a long walk admiring the scenery of the Canberra hills, juniors and coaches ran a series of downhill courses set by Tara Melhuish. Icy poles and watermelon waited for the participants at the arena. In the afternoon, after many took advantage of the swimming pool at the camp accommodation, it was time for navigating around the hill with much rock detail, on simulated relay courses set by Jo Allison and Shannon Jones. Is it a kangaroo or an orienteer? Both! There were more icy poles at the finish.

On Sunday evening Greg Barbour presented “Taste of Italy”, showing the maps of huge hills likely to be experienced at JWOC 2025. Rob Walter previewed Boboyan Divide, with the camp attendees getting to plan their routes for the first session next morning. Early on Monday, day 3 of the camp, everyone left around sunrise to make it to the southern edge of ACT to execute their plans for their courses on the granite map before it got too hot. The second training session followed soon after in a similar terrain. It was Andy Hogg’s pairs’ technical relay involving combinations of up to ten 0.7 -1.2 km loops, with a coveted prize for the top three teams to blow the horn. Participants were coming from, and going in, all directions. The training was wrapped up before noon, with control collectors left to pick up the flags in the heat.

Well done to everyone who took part. Thank you to all the organisers and support team.

I’ve just released an iOS app that makes it easy and fun to browse upcoming Orienteering events in Australia.

The app uses Eventor to load all upcoming events in Australia. You then set your home area, and the app will display your next upcoming event. You can also view a list of all events, mark events as favourites, filter the event list and view the events on a map. The app also shows the driving distance and time to an event, and lets you launch maps to navigate to the event.

Events: The Broulee Dunes map will be used for both the Wildfire Sports Autumn Classics Day 1 and Wildfire Sports Autumn Classics Day 2.

Location: Sand dunes between Broulee and Moruya on the NSW south coast.

Map/Terrain: Broulee Dunes 2020. Scale: 1:7500, 2.5m contours.

This is a new map of a venue never previously used for orienteering. The map is typical south coast sand dune terrain which hugs the beach between Broulee and the Moruya airport. The vegetation is relatively slow and thick in places, but fast and open in others. The dunes get smaller and less distinct the further you are from the beach. There are a few tracks and a large creek running through the map. A recent bushfire has burnt through a section of the map, resulting in better visibility and faster running.

The Sprint Series has had a spectacular start. So far we’ve had three great maps and three very different, challenging and fun courses and a great turnout.

Sprint Event #1: Kingston Foreshore

A brand new map; very European style around a public areas; tricky navigation in small parks; stamina required for over 4km.

Sprint Event #2: Jerra Primary

Only the second use of this map, freshly updated for the sprint; lots of quick route choices required; a map exchange and a map flip; pivot controls to keep you alert!

Sprint Event #3: Orana School

Second use of half of the map, the other half is brand new; very tricky navigation in and around oddly shaped buildings; heaps of route choice.

Sprint Event #4: Haig Park

The next event in the series is at Haig Park. David Stocks and Ella Cuthbert have done an outstanding job creating the sprint course. This is the most unusual map in the ACT, as due to almost no normal orienteering features in the area every single tree has been mapped and classified. Imagine trying to navigate by tree size and type.

Added to this are two mazes that will really test your navigation and make you think quickly.

And to top it off – the event will feature head-to-head racing:

find a partner who is approximately the same speed

punch the start simultaneously (there will be 2 start units)

one person grabs course A, the other grabs course B

the courses are identical, except that they do certain parts of the course in opposite directions

race to the finish!

The head-to-head racing is optional – if you don’t want to do it then take either course A or B.

Remember you MUST pre-enter for the sprint series event, either with the season pass or just the Haig Park event.
