Crane and Stewart Win Jim Sawkins Handicap Divisions

Sunday’s fifth staging of the Jim Sawkins Memorial Handicap returned to Goorooyaroo which evoked memories of the eponymous orienteer who enjoyed long distance events in fast, open terrain.  Everyone was pleased to see Anne Sawkins at the event to enjoy the day with their youngest son, Rob, his wife Rima and the Sawkins grandchildren Ruby and Maddison to remember Jim at the venue of his last event and for the grandchildren, their first event.

Matt Crane (pictured right) and Ross Stewart (pictured left) were the handicap winners (scores) of Division 1 (Open) and Division 2 (Juniors & Masters) respectively of the Memorial event. Nobody has managed to win the either division twice and for Jason McCrae it was the second year as the runner-up.

The event (results) was also round 8 (but effectively round 7) of the ACT League. Crane again took the honours scoring 108 points for his electrifying 67min57sec for the 12.8 km Red 1 Course, with Andy Hogg picking up 96 points and Carol Harding third on the day with 92 points, her best score for the year. Olle Poland still heads the League table on 442 points for his best four scores, just three points ahead of Crane and a further 22 points to Lizzie Ingham, currently the most consistent competitor. With Poland and Ingham overseas for a few more weeks, and three more League events in the next four weeks, Crane should be able to capitalise on their absences and open a commanding lead.

The four Red courses all had the same first four legs, so competitors can check their splits against all other competitors on all four courses.  The Bushflyers have extended their lead in the Southern Cross Inter-club Challenge. They scored 51 points on Sunday, with Red Roos next best on 41 and Parawanga with 23 just outscoring the Abominable-Weston Emus alliance by a point. Bushflyers have now amassed 389 points, clearly leading Parawanga on 348 with Red Roos third on 289.
