130 Brave Heat, Hills and High Fences at Goorooyaroo

Friday, 20 January 2012

130 competitors braved the heat (30c), hills, and high fences in race 10 in the 2011-12 Runners Shop Twilight Series at Goorooyaroo with the Anna Quayle (pictured right) achieving the most surprising performance with the fastest time of 31min 10sec for a woman on the Orange 1 course. She was a key member of the Canberra Cockatoos for a few years before she and husband Tom returned to Sweden around 2007. Both would have found the heat, hills and hard ground challenging; Tom, who has the best result for an Australian man, 13th, in World Long Distance Championships, recorded the third fastest time in the men’s class.

The honours on the evening went to the leading competitors Trevor Jacobs 125 points, Matt Crane 124 and Dave Shepherd 123, with Anna Quayle picking up 122 points, Lizzie Ingham 121 and Tom Quayle 120.  Crane clocked the fastest time of 23min 38sec for the 4.8 km Orange 1.

While theoretically 30 competitors could still win the major prize in the competition, logically the top three, Jacobs on 623 points from his best five scores, Crane on 621 and Shepherd on 619 will be very hard to catch.  There is a gap to Rob Walter on 610, Grace Crane 606 and Josh Blatchford (pictured left) and Pauli Piiroinen on 605. Blatchford is new to Canberra having just moved here to complete his tertiary studies. He has clocked some good times and won the event at Bruce Ridge on 16 November.

Seven competitors, Geoff Stacey, Phil Walker, Ann Ingwersen, Carol Harding, Greg Lane, Bob Mouatt and Alan Kuffer have competed in all 10 events so far in the 2011-12 series.

As explained last week, even if you might not be able to finish high on the table, you could still work on improving your HRS (handicap relative speed) in preparation for the main season.

The results for event 10 are here.

The next event, # 11, will be at Red Hill.  The assembly area will be at the end of Strickland Crescent, Deakin; see map here
