And Then There Were Five

Saturday, 6 February 2010

The number of possible winners of the Runners Shop Twilight Series is now down to five, Trevor Jacobs, Shannon Jones, Rob Walter, Oliver Poland (pictured) and Anthony Scott, after round 13. With round 7 excluded, Jacobs has 872 points from his best seven scores, Jones 862 and Walter 856. Poland has only run in six events, racking up 743 points and Scott has only five events and 619 points, but both are still in contention because there are still enough races left to enable them to catch the three leaders.

Poland was the outstanding competitor at last Wednesday’s event at Mt Majura, clocking just 32 min 39 sec for the 6.3 km Orange 1 course, 12 seconds faster than Australian elite champion Dave Shepherd and easily picking up the maximum 125 points for the event. Scott scored his third consecutive 124 pointer with his time of 33 min 36 sec and Jacobs grabbed another 123-pointer for 39 min 32 sec. Jones was fourth on the points table for the evening for her time of 35 min 49 sec. Walter was the only one to the top five to miss out with a score of 114 points.

Ian Lawford showed he is in good form approaching the start of the new Classic season with a time of 35 min 13 sec, which returned him 121 points, and Arthur Watson equalled his best result for the year with another 120-pointer.
Georgia Parsons and Carol Harding were the best in Women’s Junior and Masters classes on the Orange 1 course.  Darryl Erbacher (33 min 12 sec) and Anita Scherrer (34 min 57 sec) were the fastest in the Masters classes on the 4.1 km Orange 2 course, but the two fastest were the new mums in the Women’s Open class, Jo Allison in 29 min 10 and Allison Jones in 33 min 9 sec.

With only six rounds to go, competitors need to be aware that the top 10 scores will be aggregated to determine the final total, so competitors like Scott and Poland will need to ensure they compete and do well in the remaining events.

The results are here.

The progress points are here.

Next week’s event will be at Wanniassa Hills.
