Belinda Lawford Wins First Australian Multi-Day Major

Belinda Lawford’s win in National League Senior Women’s race # 8 also secured her first victory as a senior in the prestigious Australian 3-Days based on the four races over the Easter period. Lawford took a 74 seconds lead into the final day which she doubled to beat the Victorian champion Natasha Key by 2 mins 27 secs. Charlotte Watson was fourth and Tamsin Moran sixth on the day.

Zoe Melhuish again upstaged her older sister Tara with another impressive run in the Junior Women’s division third on the day and third overall. Although she is not yet 16, she seems certain to be selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Champs in Hungary in July.

Matt Crane was the best for Canberra Cockatoos in the Senior Men’s division on the day and overall. Crane was second after three races and held his place even though he was beaten by a few seconds into third place in the final race. He was closely followed on the day by, Andrew Barnett 4th, Matt Doyle 5th and Martin Dent 8th.

Patrick Miller was another to impress selectors with consistently good runs in the Junior Men’s division on each of the four events over Easter. He was third on the day and fourth overall.
